Edwards & Joseph Earn Co-MVP Honors

Fifth-year seniors Gus Edwards and Sebastian Joseph were both honored with the Homer Hazel Award Friday at the Rutgers football senior banquet. The award has been given out each season since 1953 to the most valuable player on the team, with this marking the second time being shared (1972).

Edwards, who was named honorable mention All-Big Ten, joined Rutgers as a graduate transfer and led the team with 713 rushing yards, 816 all-purpose yards and seven total touchdowns asthe starting running back in 2017. The Staten Island native rushed for 512 yards in conference play, the most by a Scarlet Knight in a Big Ten season since joining the conference. He recorded a season-high 109 rushing yards versus Maryland, adding a go-ahead 23-yard receiving score to help the Scarlet Knights secure the win. In addition, Edwards broke free for a 74-yard touchdown in the Purdue triumph, the longest rush ever by a Rutgers player against Big Ten competition.

Joseph started all 12 games at nose tackle this season and finished his career playing in 49 consecutive games and 50 overall. The defensive lineman totaled 41 tackles as a senior with a career-high seven in the win over Maryland. He also had 4.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass batted down, one forced fumble, one blocked field goal, was a candidate for the AFCA Good Works Team and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten. Joseph was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and the program’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

Both Joseph and Edwards signed with Lunar Sports Group heading into the 2018 NFL Draft. Pat Capra will serve as the agent for both clients.
