Devin McCourty Helps Raise $220k for Tackle Sickle Cell

New England Patriots All-Pro Safety, Devin McCourty teamed up with Boston Medical Center and Next Step to host “Tackle Sickle Cell Casino Night” presented by Rockport Mortgage on Monday, October 16th. The event, which took place at Royale in Boston, was an enormous success, generating a net profit of $220,000 which will support Next Step’s free year-round programming for teenagers and young adults living with sickle cell disease as well as the Center of Excellence in Sickle Cell Disease at Boston Medical Center. The venue was filled with almost 400 attendees including a number of Devin’s New England Patriots teammates.

“I can’t believe how big this has gotten and I’m so grateful for our partners Next Step & Boston Medical Center along with all of our incredibly generous sponsors and donors,” said McCourty. “I never dreamed that collectively we could have this kind of impact on the Sickle Cell Community. I’ve had a chance to personally meet so many sickle cell families so I know the difference this will make in their lives.”

Devin and his twin brother Jason McCourty of the Cleveland Browns launched the Tackle Sickle Cell campaign in 2013 in partnership with Embrace Kids Foundation to educate the public, increase blood donors, and raise money and awareness for the fight against sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder, impacting nearly 100,000 Americans.

Over the last five years, the twins have hosted multiple blood drives and fundraising events in their home state of New Jersey as well as the two cities where the twins play for their respective NFL teams. This past June 19th, in honor or World Sickle Cell Day, Embrace Kids Foundation announced that The McCourty Twins Tackle Sickle Cell Campaign would be covering the full cost of college books for all Embrace Kids Scholarship recipients that have sickle cell!

On Monday night, November 13th, Jason McCourty is hosting Tackle Sickle Cell Comedy Night taking place at the Cleveland Improv in Cleveland, Ohio. Proceeds from the event will be donated to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio to support children and families battling sickle cell disease.
